On the second day of Christmas… visit Reykjavik

Looking for a post-Christmas getaway before the New Year kicks in? In the run up to December 25th and beyond, we’ll be counting down the best spots for a festive break – so go on, soak up the atmosphere whilst the lights are still sparkling and the festivities are still in full swing… 

Reykjavík is already the perfect winter destination, with the Northern lights making regular displays across the cities sky. However, there are also lots of other events and attractions to visit in the city of Reykjavík during the festive period.

Reykjavík is home to many folktales and this tradition is definitely embraced during the holiday season. The Christmas Creatures were created to tell and share folktale stories, connecting locals and visitors, and you’ll learn all about Iceland’s 13 Santas (the Yule Lads). You can see the Christmas Creatures in action at the Reykjavík Art Museum City Hall.

The Botanic Garden in Reykjavík is a popular destination for tourists, and is decorated beautifully with lights and Christmas décor. Take a stroll through the Botanic garden and take in the beauty of the Christmas season, but make sure that you wrap up warm.Christmas markets aren’t overly popular in Reykjavík, but you can visit one of the city’s only traditional Christmas markets in Ingólfstorg Square, where you can also find and an ice skating rink, decorated brightly. Eat, drink and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere!

Laugardalur Christmas Valley is the one of the best places to visit whilst in Reykjavík at Christmas – think reindeers, ice skating and even a thermal pool for you to swim in to warm yourself up after a long day out.

Keeping warm whilst in Reykjavík during the winter is key. Luckily the streets of the city are lined with coffee shops, perfect for you to warm up and relax for a couple of hours. On the main road heading from the Hallgrímskirkja church you will find many of these coffee shops, including Eymundsson – a bookshop with a café inside. It’s the perfect place to keep warm for an hour whilst you browse the shop and enjoy some coffee and cake.

Of course, whilst you’re in Reykjavík be sure to visit the Blue Lagoon for some relaxing time during your busy festivity-filled visit. The Golden Circle Tour is another must-visit for whilst in Reykjavík, as you’ll get to experience some of the country’s famous geysirs and waterfalls.
